History of International Yoga Day

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’ meaning “to join” or to unite.

Yoga is considered to be an ancient practice that originated 5,000 years ago in India. In the yogic lore, Shiva is seen as the first yogi or Adiyogi, and the first Guru or Adi Guru. Yoga was developed as a way to interconnect the mind, body and soul to step closer into enlightenment.

In recent years Yoga became really popular outside of India and a lot of other cultures have embodied yoga in them.

When people saw the Adi yogi, they went to him for enlightenment but after he was unaware of their presence so most of them left.

Whereas seven of them insisted to learn from him but Shiva refused to them and said there is a lot of preparation was to be done.

Then seven people sat determined through 84 years of sadhana.  Then Shiva finally took notice of them on a day when the sun was shifting from the northern to southern run that is the day of the Summer Solstice.

The date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.
